Understanding your symptoms

When unwanted thoughts and rituals take up too much space

Obsessive-compulsive disorder involves recurring, unwanted thoughts or urges, repetitive behaviors, or both. Symptoms can be distressing and interfere with everyday activities. OCD is more than a preference for neatness or an occasional worry; it can make ordinary decisions and routines feel difficult to leave behind.

Obsessions

Intrusive thoughts, doubts, images, or urges may focus on contamination, harm, mistakes, or the need for things to feel exactly right. These experiences are unwanted and can create significant anxiety.

Compulsions

Repeated washing, checking, arranging, counting, or silent mental rituals may be used to try to reduce distress. The relief can be temporary, while the cycle consumes more time and attention.

People with OCD can also experience anxiety or mood symptoms. A clinical evaluation helps clarify the pattern and identify other concerns that should be part of the care plan. Read more from the National Institute of Mental Health.

Your first visit

A careful evaluation before a treatment plan

Bring the concerns that matter to you, even if you do not yet know how to describe them. Your appointment is a chance to discuss what you are experiencing, how long it has been happening, and what you would like to change.

Evaluation may include your medical history, current medications, daily functioning, sleep, and overlapping mental health symptoms. OCD can resemble other conditions, and a clinician may recommend additional evaluation or coordination with another healthcare professional when needed.

What to bring

A medication and supplement list, information about previous treatment, and notes about symptoms you want to discuss can help make the visit useful. You can also write down questions about appointments, follow-up, and treatment choices.

What you want care to help with

Tell your provider which parts of your routine feel hardest. Your goals might involve getting through work, returning to activities, or spending less time occupied by symptoms. These details help make the conversation specific to your life.

Evidence-informed options

OCD treatment may include therapy, medication, or both

Exposure and response prevention (ERP), a form of cognitive behavioral therapy, is a treatment for OCD. It uses planned exposure to situations or thoughts that trigger distress while helping a person practice responding without compulsive rituals. ERP should be guided by a clinician with appropriate training.

Medication may also be considered. Certain antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are used to treat OCD. A prescriber weighs potential benefits, side effects, medical history, and other medications. Response is monitored over time; a medication plan may require adjustments.

At your visit, discuss which options fit your needs and what follow-up will involve. If ERP is recommended, ask our team about access to an appropriately trained therapist and how psychiatric visits can be coordinated with therapy. Learn about our approach to medication management.

Do not start, stop, or change a medication based on a website. Bring questions and concerns to your treating clinician. Additional treatment information is available in NIMH’s OCD patient guide.

Questions about OCD care

How do I know whether I need an OCD evaluation?

If intrusive thoughts or rituals are distressing, take up substantial time, or interfere with daily life, speak with a healthcare professional. A diagnosis requires evaluation; a symptom list alone cannot establish OCD.

Is OCD the same as anxiety?

OCD and anxiety disorders can overlap, but they are not interchangeable diagnoses. Assessment considers the relationship between unwanted thoughts, compulsions, distress, and other symptoms.

Do you provide ERP therapy at Sunshine Psychiatry?

Contact the office to confirm current therapy services and clinician availability. Ask about an appropriately trained ERP therapist, referrals, and coordination with your psychiatric care.

Can I schedule care without already having a diagnosis?

Yes. You can request an appointment to discuss symptoms and next steps. When contacting us, mention that you would like an evaluation for possible OCD so the team can help with scheduling.

How do I check insurance coverage?

Review our insurance page, then confirm your specific benefits with your insurance company and the office. Coverage and out-of-pocket costs depend on your plan and the visit.
